We have all been to the training session or seminar where the draw card, keynote speaker, is an expert in their field and is, or has been, unbelievably successful. The promotional material has told us of the persons many achievements and their extraordinary results. This is usually in dollar terms, and this has drawn those attending to hear how it is done. Quite often we are lead to believe that selling is a one dimensional activity and that if you do as they do, you will be as successful. To believe that by listening to someone up on the platform explain their secrets and systems on how they reached the heights of sales excellence is one thing. It does not follow however that they will give you the same results, is not that easy. Naturally what they did has worked well for them however it is a vastly different matter thinking if you do the same your results will be the same. Unfortunately many who embark on a career in selling end up leaving. They gave up on the profession, due to the fact that what seemed to be the formula for success was not.

Discover Your Strengths

Success in selling is a combination of learning from others who have been successful plus looking at yourself and recognising what strengths you already have. No matter who you are you have some things you already do well. You should discover what they are and recognise your strengths as it is on these you will build your sales career. For example, you may already be well organised and can prioritise your work. But you have discovered, when meeting with prospects that you don’t seem to be able to close the sale. This is an example of strength and a weakness and it can be seen from this example where some specific training will help in closing a sale. Understanding and identifying your strengths is rewarding, but it’s the weaknesses that need to be worked on so that your vision and objectives can be achieved. Training and tools are available for self-improvement; they are numerous and cover all possible aspects of personal development and selling skills.

Note Pad and Pen

Training for the salesperson has to be on going and it is best to carefully look at what training you need, so that the areas of most need are tackled first. This will enable you to target your training and equip you to be more effective sooner. It is essential to avoid the mistake of wasting time and money on your development and training, if you have not first established the areas you want to see improved. You need to apply strategic thinking to your development and decide what you can use from what is available. The start-up cost for this exercise is very little; a note pad and pen and the commitment for you to make sufficient time available to start and construct your own personal self-improvement programme.

Today sales training options are numerous, available in many forms and cover all aspects of the sales process. When making the commitment to yourself to increase and gain more knowledge about your selling activity it is important to ensure the type of learning you undertake is enjoyable and achieves the outcome you have identified. We all have some things we already do well and you owe it to yourself to recognise what they are as your starting point for self education and improvement.

Where to Start

Regardless of the form of training you decide on it is important to know what you want and what will meet the needs you have identified and prioritised. Most conferences, seminars and other training programs provide an all-encompassing overview of selling. While all the knowledge is useful, you need to make sure the content will match the needs you have identified. All information is useful and while you may take in and record the whole content of a session put it aside for later use if those topics and subjects that don’t immediately match your requirements. They will form part of your library for future reference.

One Size Does Not Fit All

It is important to find the learning style you are comfortable with. Only by feeling you are part of the training and having respect for the trainer or system will you gain the most benefit. The danger to your business is when you take on too much information and feel it all needs to implemented immediately. This will lead to frustration. You won’t be able to stick to your objectives and address those areas you have prioritised for action. The way to succeed is to fully understand what you do, how you go about your selling and to understand that your success will only come from your commitment to self education.

Peer Mentors

Look at those around you and ask questions. They may be the best to help you get started. Don’t be backward in coming forward. A true professional will be willing to help you in your self education program and they will have the satisfaction of knowing they have been of help. Other options for sales training are available through motivational speakers, seminars, workshops, conferences, books, CD’s, DVD’s, mentors, coaches and trainers. A search on Google for sales training will deliver 119 million results. You therefore need to have a clear direction of the areas you need to train in. Once you have decided where you require training you will be half way there.

Just Do It

The secret of all knowledge is to apply what you know by taking the steps to change what you do in a planned approach today. Tomorrow is too late. Understand that the process may take time; there is no silver bullet or short cut to your success.

All successful sales professionals understand and appreciate the fact that with out continued personal sales training they will soon fall behind their competition and suffer a loss in their income.

Whether you are starting out in sales or you are an experienced salesperson the need for learning never stops and regardless of the current market, good or bad, it is only by making the effort to attend training sessions and undertake programs will you maintain your edge.

The choice today for sales training is wide with seminars, conferences and work shops covering all aspects of selling, they can range from a few hours or to several days in duration.

It generally follows that the longer the event the more content will be delivered and delegates will walk away with a large amount of material which will help them in their careers.

Share the Knowledge.

Seminars also hold another major benefit in addition to the learning experience, all the other salespeople attending are of like mind, in the same profession and will be happy to share stories and experiences.

This is seen as one of the side benefits of attending seminars as it is through meeting other salespeople and hearing their experiences you will gain a wider understanding of the profession and establish many useful contacts.

The use of seminars is also used by different industry groups to conduct specialised training focused on the products or services they are selling.

In deciding what seminars you should attend is really up to you however many well established events that run year after year will build up a good reputation and industry following and are of value to the salesperson.

The same can be said for the organisations running the seminars, the presenters delivering the message and the value to the individual in the material provided.

No Silver Bullet Solution

It needs to be understood that by merely attending a seminar is no guarantee you will get the full benefit for your business or personal life and that effort is needed to apply what is learned.

There is no silver bullet – all encompassing seminar on selling, the knowledge and skills required for success are varied and relate to each individuals requirements at certain stages of their career.

Be sure prior to attending any seminar you study the program or outline of the content and look to where the topics will fit in to improve your performance.

Many look to follow certain speakers and presenters, over and over, because their message is in tune with their needs and refreshes that part of their life or business and they are comfortable with the style and delivery of the knowledge.

Seminars form an invaluable role in the teaching and training of salespeople in all industries and there attendance on a regular basis should form part of your training program each year because you can only grow your business and lifestyle by continually learning new and developing your selling techniques.
